I got your package today. Lots and lots of candy. Either you're worried about me not eating enough, or trying to get rid of all that holiday candy. Thank you

I've been settling into the study, practice, study, workout routine. This semester is much busier than last. On MWF I am at class from 8-3 with about 2 hours worth of free time inbetween which I just go to the library and do homework in that time. Then practice everyday from 4-6. After that, head back to my room and rest for maybe a half hour at the most then go eat dinner ha. After, get some more studying in then go to the gym from about 9:30-11. Shower, then get in bed by 12ish. That's about how everyday goes. Busy, busy, but it does keep my mind occupied unlike last semester when I had a lot of down time.

Last Thursday I went to a lecture on the influence of American Indian symbols/mascots in sports. A Native American professor from Portland State talked and it was a very intriguing presentation. I was aware of the situation before, but hearing him speak and give the presentation, the words and mascots used now seem a lot more offensive. (i.e. Redskin) Now I wouldn't mind so much if teams changed their names. The Utes for instance. 5 years ago I thought, "How could you change the name. That has been there forever." But now I feel a bit differently about it.

I enjoy the english lit class. We've been reading the usual stuff I'm sure you know. Chaucer, Beowulf, etc. We watch the Daily Sho quite frequently in the journalism class. Mainly because they do a good job criticizing what the media does. I just find it so intriguing and there's so much you can do with the journalism field. Just get freshman year out of the way as fast as possible. Then I can really get into it. I can start convergence this time next year and then possibly study abroad junior year. We'll see, its so far away right now.

Supposed to snow 4 inches tonight. But its not Utah snow by any means. So I'd rather not have 4 inches. Hope the play was fun.

  1. Whew! You're already talking about JUNIOR YEAR?! Egad. Well, I guess that's what you're supposed to do - plan for the future. It does all sound exciting, though, doesn't it?

Boy, you are busy! It's almost midnight here, but I'm up only because I've been updating the League of Women Voters' website. It's legislative time, and they put out a daily legislative update. It's on Facebook and Twitter, too. If I weren't so behind-the-scenes, I'd say I was danged awesome! ;-)

We had a very lonnnnggg West High SCC meeting tonight. Apparently, the Red and Black is online now, so you can take a peek if you're interested.

Talked to Sarah H, and I guess Jay is having the opposite experience that you are. His first semester was great - mainly, I think, because he and his roomie were very close. But this semester, his roommate has decided he really IS a Mormon, and so hardly talks to him. And I guess he doesn't have the group support that you do, either. I hope things work out for him there. They probably will, given time.

Avenue Q was fun. I'd forgotten a lot of it, so it was almost like seeing it for the first and a half time. Jillian has moved home. Did you know that?

Speaking of snow, tell us what it's like. We haven't had any for a really long time, and the buds are starting to come up. Weird! Here's something from the Des News:

January one of driest months in Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY — January 2010 was the fourth driest January on record at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

There was .38 of an inch of moisture at the airport for the month, compared to a normal level of 1.37 inches.

In contrast, December 2009 boasted precipitation that was .12 inches above normal. The records for January are 3.23 inches of moisture in 1993 and only 0.09 inches in 1961.

January also saw the third lightest snowfall on record. The Salt Lake airport received just 2.3 inches of snow for the month, or only 14 percent of the normal 14.5 inches for a January.

Seasonally (September-January), snowfall is only 62 percent of normal thus far in Salt Lake.

    Soooo. It's been pretty dry.

As for the Native American guy, it is always interesting to hear from someone else's perspective, isn't it? We don't really think about all this. And certainly, we don't think of it as a slam.

I guess there's a fine line between conscious racism and benign bias. It's good to think about.

You mentioned the candy, but how about the cookies? I hope they weren't smashed. We actually repacked the whole thing in the middle of the post office. The PO lady there told me I'd be better off sending a flat-rate package. That was fun!

I told Lori not to come this week because I'm on deadline, but I still don't quite know how to ramp this down.

See you soon in SF. Have you made plans to see your friend on Saturday?
